Deutschland 2014 part 2

We are already back in the USA and Simon and Max are back in school, below though are images from the second half of our trip to Germany.

Papa’s sister Sandra came to see the boys and brought them a gift.

We went to Bad Saulgau to hang out.

Simon went manhole and air vent exploring

And a wild ride in a helicopter

Fleischkäse is clearly appreciated here

And Max liked it too.

Climbing is so much fun

20140311-102113.jpg

Simon decided he no longer was afraid of heights.

But men who work hard sleep well

Oma came along to see the Fasnet parade in Aulendorf

20140311-102453.jpg

There were many masks and the boys were scared at times.

20140311-102714.jpg

Many bands were marching too

20140311-102842.jpg

And more masks

20140311-102936.jpg

But the scariest are clearly the witches

20140311-103043.jpg

Max decided he had enough and balled

20140311-103136.jpg

This was a bit too loud, but Max was just startled.

Good times in Sigmaringen

Hello there

We got to see the Rottweiler Fasnet and many relatives on Fat Tuesday.

Deutschland 2014 part 1

We decided to go to Germany so Simon and Max could see family there and timed it so that they could experience Southwest German traditional carnival here. Below are some impressions from the first few days there.

The boys checking out the Greensboro Airport after a canceled flight.

Simon on board of the plane to Atlanta

20140301-060720.jpg

With only 20 minutes to spare in Atlanta we have no pics from that airport as we were too busy running with the boys from D terminal to E terminal but you can surely imagine the picture.

Once dinner was served on the flight to Zürich and we went through the typical nighttime routine it didn’t take the boys very long to fall asleep. Here Simon on Papa’s lap.

20140301-061338.jpg

And Max on the lap and next to Sara.

20140301-061521.jpg

Sara passed out a bit too.

20140301-061704.jpg

Max looked very happy in the morning

20140301-061758.jpg

And Simon slept until it was time to land.

20140301-061906.jpg

We waited for our suitcases and car seats in Zürich, but knew that they likely did not “run” as fast in the Atlanta airport as we did and thus did not make it.

20140301-062319.jpg

None of our stuff arrived and eventually the kind folks at Hertz let us use 2 car seats so we could continue our trip. Sara then flew on to Hannover to see her family and Papa and the boys drove on to Germany. As soon as we crossed the border to Germany we stopped at a bakery in Stockach.

And the butcher shop next door

20140301-063106.jpg

The weather was mild enough to enjoy a little snack outside.

20140301-063223.jpg

After a nap we went to Ravensburg to pick up Mama from the train station.

20140301-063356.jpg

A very happy reunion at the train station

20140301-063508.jpg

The next day we went to Bad Saulgau and the boys got to play firefighters.

We also walked around a bit and the boys liked the sculptures surrounding a fountain.

Lunch in Bad Saulgau at Cafe Kostbar

This is our rental car and it is unclear why wagons aren’t popular in the USA.

20140301-064104.jpg

The weather was quite nice for February and here the boys played in Oma’s gravel driveway.

20140301-064328.jpg

The boys slept very well during their naps, too well actually because of the cumulative missed sleep from the trip.

20140301-064549.jpg

Both boys were totally out and had to be woken up.

20140301-064727.jpg

On Wednesday we went to Ravensburg.

Berliners (German jelly donuts) for the boys.

That night the witches were freed in Ostrach

Fasnet in Germany allows the boys to re-use their Halloween costumes

20140301-065435.jpg

That night Mama and Papa went out and were pretty much the only folks not dressed up.

20140301-065636.jpg

Below are a few of the costume groups we encountered. And these are just groups of friends who decide to have a theme.

And…

20140301-070303.jpg

Oma worked very hard on the laundry and the weather obliged.

Oh yeah, dig in.

This is a very cool playground

Our friend Maria was also there with her 2 daughters.
